10 ideas to make your 21st birthday memorable

January 19, 2021

Birthdays are a great thing. Until now you were able to get a license, you’re allowed to vote, but now comes the most exciting birthday in your life - the 21st. And of course, you want it to be memorable.

In one of the previous blogs, where we wrote about the 3 most famous Australian birthday party traditions, we mentioned that Aussies have a special tradition for the 21st birthday, called Handing over of a Key that makes 21st birthday extra grandiose. This symbolic present, followed by a parent’s speech, means that the one that celebrated his/hers 21st birthday can now come and go out of the house as they please. Also, it’s not so unusual to get a car for your 21st birthday.

Today we will push things a little further and bring you 10 ideas on how to make your 21st birthday extra memorable and celebrate in style.

1. Birthday party theme

The best way to start planning a birthday party is by choosing a theme. A themed party can be lots of fun. Whether such a party reflects your personality, or you wish to step out of the box, you should announce the theme in the invitations. That way the guests can prepare for it and enjoy it to the fullest. Birthday party themes are countless, and here are just some you could try:

· a safari theme

· a pirate theme

· around the world

· TV/Movie-inspired

· book inspired

· video game inspired

· dream job occupations

· vintage/retro

· black and white

· princess/fairy/Barbie party

· horror party

The best way to start planning a birthday party is by choosing a theme

2. Birthday party decoration

What’s a celebration without decorations? Once you’ve decided what theme will mark your 21st, set decorations everywhere. The decoration must follow the theme of the party. Everything must be in the sign of the number 21.

Thousands of balloons (don’t forget flashy number balloons), streamers, banners, centerpieces, customized shirts, party hats, confetti, tiaras, LED letters. Of course, all of this has to be photographed. You could set up photo booths where everyone can take a picture and have a great time. Don’t forget to decorate the photo booth and don't be afraid to overstep a little bit. It is all in the name of fun.

3. Food & drinks

Since the theme and decorations are in harmony, you can use the food you serve to connect the two. Be creative here too. These don’t have to be festive meals that require you to gather around a table. For instance, your home can become a small themed restaurant with a variety of simple foods, depending on the theme, of course. Serve chips and salsa, hot dogs, pizza, BBQ (Aussie food that is almost considered a tradition), guacamole, snacks or any other food that everyone loves. With so much food on the table, don’t forget the hand-wipes for sticky fingers, serving platters, cups, and straws.

If you want everything to be perfect and you don't want to forget anything, Spotfood is here to make it possible.

Whatever you have chosen for your menu to keep your guests full, there should not be a birthday without a birthday cake. Of course, prepare yourself, because everyone expects a great speech for your 21st while handing out the cake to guests.

Another great idea could be having an additional cake that is made out of bottles of various alcoholic beverages. You can make this into a project and do your DIY alcohol cake. For this project, you need a cake stand, glitter paper, fun glitter tape, numbers 21 and of course alcohol. Arrange bottles in a circle. Then wrap them with glitter paper and glitter tape, and put the number 21 on top. You can make the cake in several layers, it's up to you to decide how many of them can stand without everything falling apart.

4. Go to the casino

Aside from the fact that you can now go to bars and legally drink alcohol, another cool thing you can now do is gambling. While we do not encourage you to make a habit of it, you now can legally experience the thrill of entering the casino for the first time. All those lights, luxury, dice, and good fun.

Before heading to the casino with your friends, learn a few important rules about every game you plan to play. While you’re playing, order yourself some drinks. Welcome to the adult world.

Set a budget that you will not go above. Let the games begin, and let the beginner's luck follow you around.

5. Learn how to make cocktails

Making cocktails is an art. You need to know which drinks go well with each other, what juice can be mixed with which spirits and vice versa, what ratio of spirits and juices you need to have, whether to stir it or shake it and whether to add ice or not. Now is the right time to learn it. And of course, you will taste each cocktail to choose your favorite one.

Try to find some bartending classes, look for recipes online or watch some videos. Remember to drink slowly and responsibly. Cheers!

6. Play "truth or dare"

Everyone knows about the game "truth or dare". This is a great way to have fun, but also to get to know each other better. Gather around on the floor, spin the bottle and whoever the bottle neck turns to will participate in the game. One player asks the other if they'd prefer to answer a truth or dare question. When a player decides, he needs to answer a question or do a task and if he refuses to do anything, he is penalized, usually by drinking a shot. The further the evening goes, the more interesting and spicy things become.

If you don't know what you would ask during a game, check Cosmopolitan, Teen Vogue or Man of Many for some great ideas.

7. Plan a road trip

One of the best ways to make memories is to go on a road trip. Whether you choose to go somewhere near or far, we guarantee that not only you will have fun all the time, but also you will connect even better with the people you travel with. 8. Go to an escape room

If you are looking for something different and unique to celebrate your 21st, an escape room party is a great piece of entertainment. Adrenaline, loads of fun, teamwork and your very own adventure is all that a celebration needs.

Goescapeartist.com says an escape room is an adventure and strategy game that tests your mental limits. You and your team have to work together to decipher clues, overcome challenges, and find your way out of a locked room in less than 60 minutes. This interactive event will teach you how to overcome adversity and work well with others. You and up to six teammates will have to band together to get out of a trapped space. Afterward, you can debrief, celebrate, and revel in your successes.

Spotfood always tries to be there for you, so we found escape room games that you can play. It is up to you to choose the most interesting (or more of them, if you are going to split into several teams) and book online.

9. Paintball

For this special occasion, you can find great birthday package deals. Paintball is a competitive team sport in which the goal is to eliminate all opponents by shooting them with dye-filled capsules called paintballs. The team consists of 3-10 players. You’ll feel like you’re in a Battleground or Call of Duty video game.

The game takes place on a field where the players work out their tactics while hiding behind various shelters. Some of the goals can be: defending or attacking a certain place, catching a flag, eliminating an opponent, winning objects of interest, and all this without being shot with a paintball. The equipment consists of a paintball gun, safety mask, hopper, and ammunition (paintballs).

Depending on the tactics and abilities of the player, the game can last from a few minutes to a few hours. So it will provide you with an unforgettable experience.

10. Get a thousand pics

A picture says a thousand words, and a thousand pictures say “I’m young and fun!”. Whatever you decide to do to celebrate your 21st birthday, make sure you record memorable moments. The next day you can arrange them together, laugh at crazy moments and poses, share them on social media. Also, choose the best ones and frame them. You can use Spotfood to find the best local photographer to help you.

If you want to be creative, buy an instant camera, and make a photo book. Have everyone write their best wishes below his/her photo. Make sure you don’t forget to give the camera your biggest smile.

And don't forget - it's all about the fun. Happy 21st!!
